Joseph's father was Isaac Mather and his mother was Sarah Jackson.  Henry Warburton and Mary (Mercy) Mather were his grandparents through his father's adoption. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Peter, Jacob, Ann, Peggy, Alice, Jane and Reuben.  He was the third oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 75 in 1897 in Bury.³

‌Joseph and Sarah were married in a religious ceremony on November 19th, 1855 at St. Peter's (Bolton) witnessed by John Blackley & Ralph Turner.⁶   There are no children.
