John's father was James Mather and his mother was Mary Stott. His paternal grandparents were Charles Mather and Mary Dawson. He had two brothers and seven sisters, named Charles, James, Mary, Emma, Nancy, Sarah, Louisa, Alice and Annie. He was the fifth youngest of the ten children.
