Alice's father was James Mather and her mother was Mary Stott. Her paternal grandparents were Charles Mather and Mary Dawson. She had three brothers and six sisters, named Charles, John, James, Mary, Emma, Nancy, Sarah, Louisa and Annie. She was the nineth oldest of the ten children.
