John's father was John Mather and his mother was Mary Jane Miller. His paternal grandparents were Isaac Mather and Elizabeth (Betty) Marsden. He had five brothers and three sisters, named William, Isaac, Abraham, Henry, Harold, Mary, Esther and Ruth. He was the fourth oldest of the nine children. He died at the age of 26 on July 23rd, 1908 in Lancashire.
