Henry's father was John Mather and his mother was Mary Jane Miller. His paternal grandparents were Isaac Mather and Elizabeth (Betty) Marsden. He had five brothers and three sisters, named William, Isaac, John, Abraham, Harold, Mary, Esther and Ruth. He was the seventh oldest of the nine children. He died at the age of 1 in March 1893 in Darwen.²
