John was born in 1825 in Withnell and his baptism took place on February 25th, 1825 in Leyland.1 2  John's father was Jonathan Mather and his mother was Catherine Fielding.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Esther Mason. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Robert, Thomas, Alice, Martha and Esther.  He was the youngest of the six known children. He had three half-sisters named Sarah, Catherine and Sarah.
