John was born on September 30th, 1804 in Darwen and his baptism took place on October 3rd, 1804 at Over Darwen Lower Chapel conducted by H W T .1  John's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Ellen Chambers. He had four brothers and six sisters, named Will, Henry, John, Thomas, Betty, Hannah, Ellen, Nanny, Molly and Alice.  He was the youngest of the eleven children.
