Betty was born in 1779 in Darwen and her baptism took place on November 14th, 1779 at Over Darwen Lower Chapel conducted by Reverend Robert Smalley.1  Betty's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Ellen Chambers. She had five brothers and five sisters, named Will, Henry, John, Thomas, John, Hannah, Ellen, Nanny, Molly and Alice.  She was the second oldest of the eleven children.
