Alice was born on August 24th, 1801 in Darwen and her baptism took place on October 3rd, 1801 at Over Darwen Lower Chapel conducted by H W T .1  Alice's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Ellen Chambers. She had five brothers and five sisters, named Will, Henry, John, Thomas, John, Betty, Hannah, Ellen, Nanny and Molly.  She was the tenth oldest of the eleven children.
