John was born in 1827 in Little Hulton and his baptism took place on August 12th, 1827 at St. Mary (Ellenbrook).1 2  John's father was William Mather and his mother was Martha Tyldesley.  His paternal grandparents were Ellis Mather and Ann Thornley; his maternal grandparents were Samuel Tildsey and Martha Mort. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Matthew, Edwin, Samuel, Ann and Alice.  He was the third youngest of the six children.  He died at the age of 62 in 1889 in Farnworth.3

‌John and Alice were married in a religious ceremony on September 6th, 1863 at St. Mary (Deane) by Vicar Francis H Thicknesse and witnessed by John Millington, (X); Catherine Millington, (X).3  They had a son and four daughters, named John, Sarah, Martha, Caroline and Elizabeth.
