James' father was John Mather and his mother was Jane (Jenny) Roskell. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Alice Calderbank. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Joseph, John, William, Edward, Mary, Alice and Jane. James and Edward were twins. He died at 4 months old in March 1848 in Horwich. His burial was on April 2nd, 1848 in Horwich.²
