Edward's father was John Mather and his mother was Jane (Jenny) Roskell. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Alice Calderbank. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Joseph, John, William, James, Mary, Alice and Jane. James and Edward were twins. He died at the age of 14 in April 1861 in Horwich. His burial was on May 2nd, 1861 in Horwich.
