Emma was born in December 1856 in Whitefield.1  Emma's father was Francis Mather and her mother was Rachel Whitworth Mills.  Her paternal grandparents were James Chadwick Mather and Sarah Charlton. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Francis, William, Arthur, Thomas, Elizabeth, Betsy and Sarah.  She was the second oldest of the eight children.
