Ellen was born in March 1838 in Breightmet.1  Ellen's father was James Mather and her mother was Martha Austin.  Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Brabin. She had two brothers and three sisters, named John, Thomas, Elizabeth, Ann and Mary.  She was the third oldest of the six children.
