Thomas' father was James Mather and his mother was Martha Austin. His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Brabin. He had a brother and four sisters, named John, Elizabeth, Ellen, Ann and Mary. He was the fourth oldest of the six children. He died as an infant at 6 months old in December 1840 in Breightmet.¹

- Thomas died Q3 or Q4 1840. There were two infant deaths (aged 0) in Bolton in 1840; Little Bolton and Tonge with Haulgh (this Thomas).
