Edward was born in August 1823 in Billinge and his baptism took place on August 3rd, 1823 at St. Aidan (Billinge).1  Edward's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Anne Gaskell.  His paternal grandparents were Henry Mather and Betty Anderton. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Henry, John, Ellen, Elizabeth and Mary.  He was the third oldest of the six children.
