Ellen was born in November 1818 in Billinge and her baptism took place on November 29th, 1818 at St. Aidan (Billinge).1  Ellen's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Anne Gaskell.  Her paternal grandparents were Henry Mather and Betty Anderton. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Henry, Edward, John, Elizabeth and Mary.  She was the second oldest of the six children.
