Elizabeth was born in September 1825 in Billinge and her baptism took place on September 18th, 1825 at St. Aidan (Billinge).1  Elizabeth's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Anne Gaskell.  Her paternal grandparents were Henry Mather and Betty Anderton. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Henry, Edward, John, Ellen and Mary.  She was the third youngest of the six children.
