Mary was born in February 1829 in Billinge and her baptism took place on February 8th, 1829 at St. Aidan (Billinge).1  Mary's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Anne Gaskell.  Her paternal grandparents were Henry Mather and Betty Anderton. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Henry, Edward, John, Ellen and Elizabeth.  She was the youngest of the six children.
