Andrew's father was Charles Mather and his mother was Maria Hough. His paternal grandparents were Andrew Waddicar and Sarah Mather. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Alfred, Charles, Sarah, Ada and Lilly. He was the third oldest of the six children. He died in January 1884 in Edgworth.¹
