Sarah's father was Charles Mather and her mother was Maria Hough. Her paternal grandparents were Andrew Waddicar and Sarah Mather. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Alfred, Andrew, Charles, Ada and Lilly. She was the second oldest of the six children.
