Alfred was born in August 1871 in Edgworth.1 2  Alfred's father was Charles Mather and his mother was Maria Hough.  His paternal grandparents were Andrew Waddicar and Sarah Mather. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Andrew, Charles, Sarah, Ada and Lilly.  He was the oldest of the six children.  He died at 2 months old in October 1871 in Edgworth.  His burial was on October 11th, 1871 at St. Anne (Turton).3 1
