Gilbert's father was George Lomax and his mother was Jane Hannah Schofield. His paternal grandparents were Levi Lomax and Margaret Booth. He had a brother and a sister, named James and May. He was the oldest of the three children. He died at the age of 73 on September 29th, 1977 in Bury.²
