Elizabeth's father was Joseph Lewis and her mother was Elizabeth Williams. Her paternal grandparents were John Lewis and Mary; her maternal grandparents were Samuel Williams and Ann Millington. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Joseph, Thomas, William, Ben, Mary, Ann and Anne. She was the seventh oldest of the eight children. She died at the age of 70 in December 1908 in Prescot.²

  In 1871, Elizabeth Houghton (33), born Neston, was living at Whiston (same as her brother Ben). They had three children.
