Arthur's father was Arthur Lea and his mother was Mary Elizabeth Warburton. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Lea and Elizabeth Brereton. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, John, Robert, Mary and Nancy. He was the oldest of the six children.
