Thomas' father was John Jones and his mother was Catherine Mather. His maternal grandparents were Solomon Mather and Mary (Mally) Grime. He had four brothers and five sisters, named William, Edward, Frederick, Ernest, Ellen, Elizabeth, Alice, Fanny and Mary. He was the second oldest of the ten children.
