Elizabeth's father was John Jones and her mother was Catherine Mather. Her maternal grandparents were Solomon Mather and Mary (Mally) Grime. She had five brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, William, Edward, Frederick, Ernest, Ellen, Alice, Fanny and Mary. She was the third oldest of the ten children.
