Sarah was born in 1864 in Victoria (Au). Sarah's father was Samuel Hughes and her mother was Mary Brereton. Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Brereton and Martha Hughes. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Enoch, George, Thomas, Harriett, Martha and Annie. She was the second youngest of the seven children. She died at the age of 78 in 1942.
