Arthur's father was Robert Hopley and his mother was Jane Pugh. His paternal grandparents were Samuel Hopley and Mary Williams. He had three sisters named Mary, Clara and Mary. He was the oldest of the four children. He died at the age of 4 on February 15th, 1879. His burial was in February 1879 at the Trefynant Cemetery.²³
