Alice's father was Thomas Hargreaves and her mother was Mahala (Milly) Smith. Her paternal grandparents were William Hargreaves and Susannah Slater; her maternal grandparents were John Smith and Mary Ann Harfoot. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Frank, Ernest, Harry, Allan, Clara, Isabel and Lucy. She was the fourth oldest of the eight children. She died at the age of 1 in December 1896 in Burnley.¹
