James' father was Isaac Greenhalgh and his mother was Betty Mather. His maternal grandparents were <unknown> and Catherine Mather. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Abraham, Isaac, William, Ann, Jane and Betty. He was the fourth oldest of the seven children. He died at the age of 78 in December 1930 in Bolton.²
