Joseph was born in March 1845 in Breightmet.¹

Birth Notes

Joseph's father was James Clough and his mother was Sarah Mather. His maternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Brabin. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, John, James, Richard, Thomas, Samuel, Robert, Ann and Margaret. He was the second youngest of the ten children.
