Thomas was born in 1829 in Breightmet.  Thomas' father was James Clough and his mother was Sarah Mather.  His maternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Brabin. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named John, James, Richard, Thomas, Samuel, Joseph, Robert, Ann and Margaret.  He was the oldest of the ten children.  He died at the age of 9 in February 1838 in Breightmet.  He was buried on February 14th, 1838 at Christ Church, Ainsworth.1
