John was born in June 1897 in Bolton.1  John's father was Wilbraham Robert Brooks and his mother was Mary Alice Banks.  His maternal grandparents were John Banks and Mary Higson. He had three brothers and seven sisters, named Wilbraham, Leslie, Fred, Ethel, Emily, Ann, Mary, Eliza, Esther and Edith.  He was the oldest of the eleven children.
