Ethel's father was Wilbraham Robert Brooks and her mother was Mary Alice Banks. Her maternal grandparents were John Banks and Mary Higson. She had four brothers and six sisters, named John, Wilbraham, Leslie, Fred, Emily, Ann, Mary, Eliza, Esther and Edith. She was the second oldest of the eleven children.
