William's father was James Brereton and his mother was Hannah Morrey.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel Brereton and Jane Whittingham. He had five brothers and three sisters, named James, Thomas, John, George, Daniel, Mary, Elizabeth and Ann.  He was the second youngest of the nine children.
