John was born in January 1820 in Bridgemere and his baptism took place on January 16th, 1820 in Wybunbury.1 2  John's father was James Brereton and his mother was Hannah Morrey.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel Brereton and Jane Whittingham. He had five brothers and three sisters, named James, Thomas, George, William, Daniel, Mary, Elizabeth and Ann.  He was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
