Samuel's father was John Brereton and his mother was Mary Brassington.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel Brereton and Jane Whittingham. He had four brothers and three sisters, named George, Thomas, William, John, Ann, Mary and Elizabeth.  He was the fourth oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 80 on October 27th, 1888 in Market Drayton.²
