Margaret was born in July 1829 in Weston (near Crew) and her baptism took place on July 25th, 1829 in Wybunbury.1 2  Margaret's father was William Brereton and her mother was Elizabeth Brockley.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Brereton and Mary Buckley. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Samuel, William, Mary, Hannah and Elizabeth.  She was the oldest of the six children.
