Mary was born in 1837 in Weston (near Crew).1  Mary's father was William Brereton and her mother was Elizabeth Brockley.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Brereton and Mary Buckley. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Samuel, William, Margaret, Hannah and Elizabeth.  She was the second oldest of the six children.
