George was born in 1835 in Betley and his baptism took place there on September 21st, 1834.1 2  George's father was Thomas Brereton and his mother was Sarah Jones.  His paternal grandparents were George Brereton and Margaret Taylor. He had a brother and six sisters, named Charles, Mary, Margaret, Elizabeth, Maria, Fanny and Sarah.  He was the third youngest of the eight children. He had a half-sister named Margaret.
