Mary was born in November 1822 in Betley and her baptism took place there.1  Mary's father was Thomas Brereton and her mother was Sarah Jones.  Her paternal grandparents were George Brereton and Margaret Taylor. She had two brothers and five sisters, named George, Charles, Margaret, Elizabeth, Maria, Fanny and Sarah.  She was the oldest of the eight children. She had a half-sister named Margaret.
