Maria was born in December 1829 in Betley and her baptism took place there on December 6th, 1829.1  Maria's father was Thomas Brereton and her mother was Sarah Jones.  Her paternal grandparents were George Brereton and Margaret Taylor. She had two brothers and five sisters, named George, Charles, Mary, Margaret, Elizabeth, Fanny and Sarah.  She was the fourth oldest of the eight children. She had a half-sister named Margaret.
