Thomas' father was James Booth and his mother was Mary Shippobottom.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Booth and Ann Openshaw. He had two brothers and four sisters, named William, James, Mary, Ann, Elizabeth and Sarah.  He was the third youngest of the seven children.
