William was born in 1857 in Broxton.1  William's father was John Tomlinson Berkenhout and his mother was Margaret Tomlinson.  His maternal grandparents were Thomas Tomlinson and Martha Carr. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, John, Elizabeth, Amelia and Henrietta.  He was the fifth oldest of the six known children.
