Amelia was born in 1854 in Broxton.1  Amelia's father was John Tomlinson Berkenhout and her mother was Margaret Tomlinson.  Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Tomlinson and Martha Carr. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, John, William, Elizabeth and Henrietta.  She was the fourth oldest of the six known children.
