Thomas was born in 1850 in Broxton.1  Thomas' father was John Tomlinson Berkenhout and his mother was Margaret Tomlinson.  His maternal grandparents were Thomas Tomlinson and Martha Carr. He had two brothers and three sisters, named John, William, Elizabeth, Amelia and Henrietta.  He was the second oldest of the six known children.
