Elizabeth was born in 1848 in Broxton.1  Elizabeth's father was John Tomlinson Berkenhout and her mother was Margaret Tomlinson.  Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Tomlinson and Martha Carr. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, John, William, Amelia and Henrietta.  She was the oldest of the six known children.
