John's father was Aldred Barker and his mother was Rose (Rosanna) Anna Evans. His maternal grandparents were John Evans (Whitall) and Elizabeth Eddowes. He had four brothers and four sisters, named James, Noel, Ben, Charles, Mary, Amelia, Elizabeth and Rosanna. He was the oldest of the nine children. He died at the age of 25 on August 13th, 1900 in Ceylon.³
