Sydney was born in 1899 in Bolton.1  Sydney's father was Joseph Allen and his mother was Agnes Gregson.  His paternal grandparents were John Allen and Ellen Crank. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Joseph, Richard, Thomas, John, Albert, Martha, Mary, Agnes and Elizabeth.  He was the youngest of the ten children.  He died at the age of 55 in 1954.

‌Sydney and Elsie were married in a religious ceremony in June 1923 in Bolton.  They had a son named Reginald.  There are possibly more children.
